- Major: English linguistics

- Supervisors: Assoc. Prof. Lam Quang Dong
- Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
The thesis argues that medical meaning and pedagogic orientations in English for Medical Purposes (EMP) textbooks used in Vietnam are not simply transmitted as pre-given “content”, but are constructed through multimodal design via the purposeful orchestration of images, language, and layout within the page ensemble.
First, the comparative analysis reveals two contrasting yet complementary semiotic regimes across the textbook series. Medical Terminology (MT) privileges conceptual and hierarchical diagrams, construing medicine as a stable system for classification and terminological mastery, whereas Career Paths: Medical (CPM) foregrounds contextualised, procedural, and communicative imagery, presenting medicine as situated professional practice.
Second, at the level of visual meaning, MT predominantly employs conceptual representation and positions learners as epistemic observers, while CPM favours narrative and context-based representation and positions learners as professionally oriented interpreters.
Finally, in terms of intersemiotic meaning, MT displays a high density of elaboration (diagra-label-definition coupling), which stabilises concepts and enhances terminological precision, whereas CPM features stronger enhancement and projection, supporting procedural understanding and role-based communicative rehearsal. These findings not only confirm the explanatory value of the Integrated Multimodal Analytical Framework (IMAF) but also suggest the need to integrate the two orientations to develop both conceptual accuracy and workplace communication competence in EMP instruction in Vietnam.
12. Practical applicability, if any:
The thesis offers substantial practical value for English teacher education in Vietnam and comparable educational contexts. First, the findings enable teachers and learners to recognise that EMP textbooks do not construct medical knowledge through written text alone, but also through the coordinated design of images, language, and layout.
Accordingly, teacher education programmes can incorporate training in multimodal literacy, such as reading diagrams, interpreting professional visuals, integrating image-text information, and explaining procedures or clinical cases.
In addition, the study develops the IMAF together with a coding system and a salience rating scale, which can serve as professional tools for textbook evaluation, materials design, task construction, and teacher development in implementing EMP lessons that balance terminological accuracy with workplace communication competence.
Overall, the framework, analytical tools, and empirical findings provide a robust theoretical foundation, clear evidence, concrete guidance, and practical instruments that can be adopted or flexibly adapted across different teacher education programmes. These contributions support the ongoing innovation of ESP/EMP pedagogy towards a modern, practice-oriented approach, while enhancing training quality and expected language learning outcomes in an increasingly globalised context.
13. Further research directions, if any:
The thesis opens up several promising directions for future research to deepen and extend understanding of how multimodal literacy and intersemiotic image-text design can be integrated into EMP instruction in Vietnam.
First, to obtain a more comprehensive picture of current training practices, perceptions, and multimodal classroom implementation in EMP textbook use, future studies should be conducted on a larger scale across a wider range of institutions in different regions of Vietnam. At the same time, comparative research across educational systems or cultural contexts is needed to clarify similarities and differences in how multimodal design and intersemiotic reading are conceptualised and enacted in diverse settings.
Second, subsequent studies may focus on designing and evaluating the long-term effectiveness of different teaching strategies and training models in shaping medical students’ awareness and practice of multimodal EMP literacy. The IMAF proposed in this thesis particularly its indicators for exploiting image-text resources within the page ensemble to develop disciplinary knowledge and workplace communication should also be further refined and empirically validated to enhance its practical applicability.
Third, because this study concentrates on the semiotic design of textbooks rather than direct classroom enactment, future research should combine classroom observations, teacher-student interviews, and interaction analysis to examine how multimodal resources are “realised” in teaching and learning processes. Finally, further work should develop and evaluate assessment tools for multimodal medical literacy, such as learners’ ability to interpret diagrams, integrate image-text evidence, and perform role-based professional communication, thereby strengthening the alignment between materials design, instructional practice, and learning outcomes.
